Active Shooter Preparedness

An Active Shooter is an individual actively engaged in killing or attempting to kill people in a confined and populated area; in most cases, active shooters use firearms(s) and there is no pattern or method to their selection of victims. Active shooter situations are unpredictable and evolve quickly. Typically, the immediate deployment of law enforcement is required to stop the shooting and mitigate harm to victims.

Because active shooter situations are often over within 10 to 15 minutes, before law enforcement arrives on the scene, individuals must be prepared both mentally and physically to deal with an active shooter situation.

Our Commitment to Fire Safety

The Office of the State Fire Marshal is committed to helping the community enhance security in case of an active shooter incident. Many schools and businesses are taking proactive steps to create a safe environment, and although we applaud their efforts, some of those safety measures might not be compliant with the Kansas Fire and Building Codes.

That is our dilemma.

Our inspectors have found on multiple occasions where newly-installed reinforced doors and physical locks are not compliant with the Kansas Fire and Building Codes. Instead of providing protection, some of these security measures could cause unnecessary harm.

Ensuring Fire & Building Compliance

In order to create a safe environment, we need to work together. The Office of the State Fire Marshal urges anyone that is contemplating enhanced security measures to first contact our office to inquire about acceptable safety products. This will ensure your devices are compliant with Kansas fire and building codes.
