2018 Kansas Conference

William C. Brubaker Memorial Award

Nominations are now being accepted for the Brubaker2018 William C. Brubaker Memorial Award

In 2011, the Kansas Search & Rescue Working Group and the Kansas Division of Emergency Management adopted the William C. Brubaker Memorial Award to be presented annually in memory of Bill Brubaker.

Bill passed away unexpectedly while deployed to Elwood, Kansas during the Missouri River Floods of 2011. Bill served the citizens of Kansas in the areas of public safety and emergency management for over 40 years, most recently as a Regional Coordinator for the Kansas Division of Emergency Management. One of Bill’s responsibilities was the development of deployable resources in the State of Kansas, which included disaster search and rescue. Bill’s tireless efforts and support for disaster preparedness and response, as well as training, were instrumental in the initial development of a statewide search and rescue capability in Kansas, as well as an annual technical rescue conference.

The first award was presented posthumously to Bill at the 2012 Kansas Technical Rescue Conference and accepted by his family.

The William C. Brubaker Memorial Award is intended to recognize an individual, team or organization whose efforts exemplify the passion and dedication that Bill demonstrated for search and rescue in Kansas. This award may provide recognition in a variety of areas related to disaster search and rescue, including significant lifesaving efforts on a technical rescue incident or disaster response; training or program development related to technical rescue or disaster response; or any other significant effort that contributes to the furtherance of technical rescue or the search and rescue capability, either regionally or statewide in Kansas.

Nominations for the 2018 William C. Brubaker Memorial Award should be in the form of a letter that includes detailed information about the individual, team, or organization being nominated, including a detailed narrative of how their efforts or actions have enhanced or promoted technical rescue or disaster search and rescue at the regional or state level in Kansas. Additional documentation including pictures, media articles, etc. should also be provided, if available. Contact information for the person or organization making the nomination must also be included.

This year’s award will be presented at the 11th Annual Kansas Rescue Conference which is scheduled for October 17-19-2018 in Salina, KS. The deadline for submitting nominations for the 2018 William C. Brubaker Memorial Award is October 3, 2018.
